Laura Mulvey - Male Gaze

The Male Gaze is when the audience is being shown the prospective of a heterosexual man, a scene would focus on a woman and would be shown in the point of the view of a man. 'She is the object of male desire' (Psychoanalysis cultural theory and popular culture, John S) This will be shown through technical conventions, fore example using slow motion. Slow motions are used to give the viewer more time to look, which links in with what Mulvey says about visual pleasure. The theory was created by Laura Mulvey and was released in 1975. The essay went on to be a well known and a discussed theory in the media world. It went on to talk about how in a film the female characters can have no importance is being there and they just there to be looked at. Also she is there to show how the male feels and this can show why the woman is there.

Mulvey looks at Lacan's 'mirror stage' and looks at a child's ego and pleasures within cinematic identification.

Schedule for museum

Museum - Session 1

Below is the schedule that we had to create the animation for the museum. This gave us a time frame of what we were doing each week and also make sure that we got anything done in time for the premier.  Today we had our first session with museum, where we learnt about animation videos. We made lists of different ideas of what we want to do for the storyline of the video.

We were split into groups to look through what different ideas we had and to come up with a storyline with what we thought was out strongest idea. We then sat down as a whole group to look at the main ideas and see what everyone liked, we agreed on the idea of 'big brother society'. I feel that this idea will be strong and it will be relevant to variety of people when viewed in the museum.

Shooting Plan for New Wave film

Shooting Plan for Filming in Birmingham. 
What?- I will be shooting in Birmingham starting in Digbeth and going to the custard factory. I also hope to go to business side of Birmingham and be able to contrast between the two, I will do this if I have enough time. I think that this will work well contrasting between the custard factory and the business side. In the custard factory, I hope to film the different building and the shops that are there. Having never been to the custard factory I feel that this is the best place to film and show this part and I hope to show it through the my video. I want to explore the custard factory and I hope to show this through different shots. 
When?- I will be doing this on college trip to Birmingham, I feel that this is a good opportune to film and I feel that I have enough time to film my new wave. When doing around with a group I will have to make sure that I'm filming different parts of the custard factory, to make sure i'm not getting the same takes as others. 
How? -  I will be shooting with my 5D mark 111 and 70- 300 mm lens. I will be using the camera and lighting techniques that I have learnt. I will be using hand held camera and using natural lighting, linking to the research of The French new wave. 
Why?- I will be shooting for my New wave short film, inspired by The French new wave. I hope to be able to link my new wave back to The French new wave but to still be different. I will be using technical conventions from The French new wave, mainly using hand held camera and natural lighting. 
Where? - I will be filming in Birmingham, particular Digbeth and maybe the business side of Birmingham if i have time. I want to make sure that when filming that I'm not rushing and I hope to film as much as I can. If I find that I'm running out of time, I will make the decision of to stay in Digbeth or try to get the business area of Birmingham.

New Wave Brief

I will be shooting a New Wave Film, inspired by my contextual research of the French New Wave. I will be creating a short film with a non-linear narrative, about a city, I want to contrast a run down side of the city to the build up area. I want to explore the city and film different parts of the city. I want to document the city filming both the travelling and being in the city. I hope to use different shot and editing types and experiment with lighting. For example I want to use tracking, to make it feel like you are walking through a city. I also want to have jump cuts, I will do this in the editing stage and this will link back to my research of the French New wave. Particular linking to Jean Luc Godard film Breathless. I want to use jumps cuts to show a contrast between the two different parts of the city that I want to show.  I will be using long takes in my film to again link it back to my research investigation. However I think using long take will be effect and go to use because when you explore a city you look at it for more then a few seconds. I hope to experiment with high key lighting and low key lighting, depending on the time I shoot. I hope to be able to incorporate shooting at night into my short film. I would also like to try using a slow shutter speed, when shooting at night and see what that looks like. I hope to use mostly natural lighting, linking in with my research and how they use natural lighting to get a sense of realism. I hope to so this on a college trip to Manchester and Birmingham, I feel that this will give me enough time to film and I wouldn’t be filming too much of the same thing. As I have found that I have done in other projects. I wanted it to be somewhere where I haven’t filmed before, and showing the film from my prospective and to make it feel like you are exploring a city, when watching the short film. This short film will be about 5 to 10 minutes long. I will be using the tripods for some shots, but I will mainly use hand held camera.  Which is linking back to my New Wave Research where they mainly use hand held camera. I use would like to put the camera down and just have people walking by. For example leaving the camera on the table showing the view outside the window. I want to use different ISO, and look at using a high ISO when I'm in a run down area to add grain into the frame.  I would like to use the 50mm lens from college as well as my lens 70-300mm. I want to use these different lens because I feel that it would work well together and are different to each other. The 50mm I can use a low aperture and get a shallow depth of field.

French New Wave- 

For this contextual research I will be looking at The French New Wave. The films that I will be looking at are The 400 Blows (Led quitter cents coups)-1959, Breathless (about de soufflé)- 1960, A woman is a woman (Une femme best une femme)-1961.  I will be looking at the social condition of the production of the films and the cultural impact. Also looking at the movement of the films.

Shutter Speed

Shutter speed is how fast the camera lens is opened for. The longer your lens is shut for,   the motivation blur that you get within the frame. The faster your lens in open from the

Here I have used a fast shutter, meaning that the camera is shooting more frames pre second. A problem with this video is that the white balance is correct and the video is very yellow. I should have  checked the white balance before shooting the video instead of waiting until after to realise. When going on my camera, I need to regular check to make sure that the white balance is set correctly.


Slow Shutter Speed

Here I have used a slow shutter speed, meaning the camera taking less frames pre second. Again this videos white balance is off. Slow shutter works well having looked back at my work, this is because it looks more realistic and looks more that want you would if you were looking at it.
