Health and safety is important to be aware of when using the camera. This is both equipment, the way you use it and the people around, this is will be so you aren't causing damage to either equipment or people. When shooting I make sure I have enough room around me for the tripod and other people to walk around safely. For example if you shooting in a public area you wouldn't leave a tripod on the floor for someone to fall over.
- When shooting you need to make sure the floor area around you in tidy, this will be to make sure no one can slip over. Also not to leave objects on the floor, for example the tripod bag. This could lead to injury or damage to the equipment.
- Making sure your tripod is flat on the ground is important to, and making sure that the tripod can't fall over, this could hurt someone around or damage the equipment.
- When using the tripod it will be important to make sure its visible for people to see and not trip over. For example not hiding the tripod around a corner from someone to walk into or for someone to trip over. This could lead to injury or damage to equipment.
-When putting the equipment away, you need to make sure that it is put away correctly. For example putting the cameras in the cupboard, if they fall out next time because you haven't put them in correctly if could cause damage to the camera or hurt the person trying to get the camera out.
-When using the photography studio it will be important to make sure no wires are around, especially on the floor for someone to trip over. It will be important to make sure if we see any wires we sort them out straight away before shooting. This is to prevent injury or damage to equipment.
- When it the studio, I make sure when I'm not using the light I switch them off at the wall to make sure it they aren't getting to hot, this will make the handle hot. When someone wants to move the lights they could burn themselves. Before exiting the studio I make sure that its all where this were
and exactly how they were switched off.

ISO Experiences
ISO- ISO is how sensitive the camera is to light, you want to get your ISO as low as possible to make sure you don't have grain with the frame.
ISO 100
ISO 100 from Jessica Barratt on Vimeo.
Here i shoot at ISO 100, using natural lighting. i feel that I should have had the camera in a different position, moving is more over to the right to get balance with the frame. I was rushing to get this video shot, and I feel that this is shown within the video. I feel that I could have found a better way to shoot this video and for it to look more visual pleasing.
ISO 1600

Here I shoot at ISO 1600 in the studio using an LED light and using a fluid head tripod. I wanted to try the fluid head tripod and see what is what like to use, I felt that it worked well and looked good. I like how smooth it is and soften than a normal tripod. I feel that I could have found a better way to shoot at 1600. I don't like how the I didn't zoom in, this is because you can see the edge of the white background. I feel that if this wasn't here it would work better. Also my subject next to be in a different position, this could have been have just one person and having them on a third.

French New Wave
The French New Wave rejected the things before, for example no using camera angles.

The French New Wave is a new movement between 1959 and 1968. They didn't like the way films were being made, so made their own to how they wanted them to be made.

How and why lighting affects camera techniques for moving image.
the filmmaker's guide to digital imaging (2015) - Blain brown, Focal Press
Digital Video Handbook (2005) Tom Ang, Penguin.

Light affects the camera is different ways and this can affect what you want to shot and how you can shot. For example is you wanted to do a tracking shot, with someone going inside to outside you might have to take two takes and editing them together. This is because the light is different and you will have the correct exposure outside, by will be under exposure inside because you aren't getting as much light into the camera.

Aperture
Aperture- Aperture is how much light is coming into the camera, the lower the aperture the more light that is coming into the camera. The higher the aperture the lower amount of light that is coming into the camera. When you are in a dark place and need more light into the camera, you will need a lower aperture to get as much light into the camera a possible. You might have to a just you ISO to get the right exposure.
Aperture 2.8- 50mm LenAperture 2.8 from Jessica Barratt on Vimeo.
aperture 2.8 from Jessica Barratt on Vimeo.
For these two films I used the 50mm len to get a low aperture, I found using the len inside was a lot better then using it in outside. This was because to much light was coming into the frame, meaning it was overexposed. Having the aperture on 2.8 meant a lot of light was being let the camera, I had the ISO on 100 meaning I couldn't bring that lower to help lessing less light not the camera. Once coming inside I found it a lot easier to get the right exposure, this was because it was darker and i wasn't getting as much natural light into the camera. I like using this lens and being able to focus just one part of the frame and have your eyes focusing in on just that part of the frame. I hope to be able to use this lens for further work and see how it can help my work.
Aperture 8-Wide angle
MVI_9983 from Jessica Barratt on Vimeo.
Here I used a wide angle and aperture 8. I like using the wide angle and getting a lot more in the frame, then I would using a standard lens. I found that this would good to use for a establishing shot to get as much as possible within the lens and not leaving anything out. To make this video better I need to bring down the ISO slightly, to get more detail within the sky. I feel that this would help make the frame better.
Aperture 16-
MVI_9973 from Jessica Barratt on Vimeo.
This video was shoot at aperture 16, using the standard lens. I used a pan as well as leading lines at the end and I feel that this worked well. I like using the pan when using the standard lens because you get more of scene within the shot.
Lighting
High Kew Lighting- High lighting is where is a low contrast because there is a high amount of light. For example this could be using natural lighting, which won't create many shadows.
635A7131 from Jessica Barratt on Vimeo.
I wasn't to sure how to show high key lighting, so i thought having natural lighting would work well because it would create a low contrast. I feel that that its
Low Key Lighting- Low key lighting is where there isn't a strong a light source. This can be good for creating a moody feel within the frame. 'Low-key lighting makes the most of dark tones and shadows to create images with drama and atmosphere.'[1]
635A7114 from Jessica Barratt on Vimeo.
Here i had the light coming form the window and the light coming form the phone, I feel that this didn't work well and I need to think of a better setup. This would have worked better if i only have the single light source and I had a beth standing somewhere else. I feel that because I had the phone in the frame, it didn't create the best lighting and I wanted the lighting to be darker. I feel that it I just used the light coming from the window it would have worked a lot better.
Studio Lighting- I went into the studio to try different lighting and have different set ups of lighting. I tried rembrandt, butterfly and edge (split) lighting
Rembrant- Rembrandt is creating shadow of a triangle under the eye. This is created by having the light at a 45 degree angle and having the subject, slightly turning there head after from the light. A setup of the light is below.
635A7075 from Jessica Barratt on Vimeo.
Here i created rembrandt lighting, having the triangle lighting under the eye. I feel that this has worked well, and i like the effective that the lighting has given. To start with we found we couldn't get the rembrandt effect and had to move the light slightly and beth slightly to get the effect. I feel that once we got the lighting in the right place, it was easier to get Beth in the right place to create the lighting.
Butterfly- Butterfly lighting is having light source above the subject to create a butterfly effect under the nose. The lighting needs to be higher then the subject to get the shadow. An example of the set up in below.
635A7084 from Jessica Barratt on Vimeo.
Here I created the butterfly effect, I feel that it has worked well and looks good. I like how the shadows is only under the nose and contrasting with the rest. Which draws your eyes in.
Split lighting- Split lighting, is having the light on one side of the subject, this creates shadows on one side of the face and light on the other side. An example of split lighting is below.
635A7068 from Jessica Barratt on Vimeo.
Here I created a edge lighting by having the light to the side of Beth. This frame needs a fill light added in to make it less dark and for it too look less yellow. I liked using the split image, I feel that it creates a mood to the video. I will be using this lighting setup in upcoming work when I want to create a mood and atmosphere.
Creating shadows in an experimental set up- Here I went into a dark cupboard to be able to create shadows, I found that I could create these by using the LED light on the phone. I used the LED light and turned the light around to light up their faces, this then also lighted up the background which created the shadows.
MVI_9868 from Jessica Barratt on Vimeo.
I wasn't to sure how to create shadows or how to experiment with shadows, I felt that this was a good way to do this. I like just the dark cupboard to create these effect.

Sound
Below are examples of using the different microphones and showing the difference between each. The camera audio is the worst, and the shotgun microphone is the best. The zoom H1 can be fitted onto the top of the camera and the shotgun microphone is pugged into the side of the camera with someone holding it above or near when the person is speaking.

Music -
Editing to music
I was given the task of editing a piece of music together and had to fit it to a beat of music. I use stock footage and other clip that I could find.
final music from Jessica Barratt on Vimeo.
The video went well and better then I had expected it to, however I would have liked more time to be able to finish it. Also it I should have the cut the music that hasn't got clips, as I forgot to do this before cutting the music. Before this video I wasn't as confidence on Premiere Pro, having do this and try different things, I feel more confidence for future projects.
Having looked back at this, I have found that some beats are a little of and aren't fitting the clips. Next time I'm editing to music, I will have to make sure that they are perfectly in sync and are working well together. I will have to watch it a few times once I think I have finished and also get someone else to how it looks.

Shot/ Reverse shot is normally used in a conversation, or when characters are looking at each other. The shot goes back and forth between them, and it is use by a over shoulder shot or a point of view shot.
Establishing shot is normally used at the start of a scene to show the audience where they are, this gives the audience context and meaning. The shot that is used is a wide angled shot or an extreme wide angle shot. An example of this is below, where it shows New York City and then shows central Perk window. Introduction
'A contextual research of The French New Wave, between 1951 to 1961'
For this contextual research I will be looking at The French New Wave. The films that I will be looking at are The 400 Blows (Led quitter cents coups)-1959, Breathless (about de soufflé)- 1960, A woman is a woman (Une femme best une femme)-1961. I will be looking at the social condition of the production of the films and the cultural impact. Also looking at the movement of the films and how they are breaking the rules of film

Breathless
Everything in cinema, The working life of Jean-Luc Godard, Richard Brody, faber and faber, 2008
"The shooting of breathless took place in conditions that were in many respects unprecedented in the history of cinema. Godard was aware of their peculiarity; indeed, he would make sue that his way of making the film would be as much a part of its public identity as the story and the actors."
"The story resembles a classic American film noir, and indeed in a scene where Michel hides in movie theatre, the sound track plays a clip from Joseph H."
"Godard wanted Breathless to be shot, as much as possible, like a documentary, with handheld camera and minimum of added lighting."
http://www.newwavefilm.com/french-new-wave-encyclopedia/jean-luc-godard.shtml#biography
breathless is a based on a true story, and is Godard first film.
Has conventions of film noir - Fantasy, nothing is solved, has endless opportunities to escape the city doesn't take them. Falls in love with a girl.
Documentary like, using hand held cameras and natural lighting.
Use of jumps cuts, to cut down the time, was only meant to be 1 hour 30 minutes. Godard didn't want to cut the whole scenes, instead cut the parts of scenes. Creating the jump cut.

The Converastion - 4 hour film challenge
The conversation from Jessica Barratt on Vimeo.
Overall I felt that the 4 hour film challenge went well, however we did't finish editing within the 4 hours. The brief was to create a short film, with a narrative titled 'The conversation'. We wanted to take a different approach and show a conversation through texts, however this didn't well and the narrative didn't flow very well. The start of the films flows a lot better then the end of the film, we wasted a lot of time on the first part of the film and not as much on the second. Also all of us spent time on the first part of the film, and the split into groups. This is shown when the footage didn't flow as well. To improve this we would have need to split into 2 groups and both done footage, this would have also meant that we had more time to edited and more of us to help edit the clips together.
A problem with this shot is that its to grainy, this was because we used a high aperture, which isn't letting enough light in the camera. Meaning we had to put the ISO was on 6400. To fix this problem we need a low aperture to aloud more light into the camera, which would mean the ISO could be lowed which would get rid of the grain. After shooting we noticed that the footage was grainy, but we didn't have time to change, next time we need to look at the camera setting and make sure that its set to the right setting so that we don't get grainy shots. I feel that this shot could be improve this could be done by using rules of thirds. I felt that having both of them on a third would make the shot look more even.
This shot is slightly over exposed, you can tell by the white sky and not being able to see all the detail within the frame. For example the roof of the building is blending in with the sky. To fix this problem we would have needed to have a higher aperture so less light was being added into the camera.
