When editing I label all of my clips so I know what it is and I know where to use it. I find this easier because it makes it easier to access them all and I can can my clips easier.
I label on my hard drive, so when I go into Premier Pro I know was clips I need.
Early Editing- At the start of film, you couldn't edit. Films were shot in one take without any editing. There was only a certain amount of film that the camera reel could hold, filmmarkers and audiences wanted longer and more established film. The hold film would be seen in theatre, from the one real of film and played once. The Great Train Robbery, was make in 1903 and was a western film. It was written, directed and produced by Edwin S. Porter and was 12 minutes long, this was seen as a milestone is the film making.
Cutting- Editing started by using the jump cut that D.W Griffiths accidentally invented when making the film "The Greasers Gauntlet." He cut form a medium long shot to a long shot, this that knew as the jump cut, and editing started to progress. D.W Griffiths also invented the classical cutting, also known as continuity editing, this is a style of editing that showing emotional and this is done by the camera cutting and showing different emotions. He also invented the close up, this is the frame only has the actors head and shoulders in shot, this shot is normally used to show emotion. D.Q Griffiths invented parallel editing, this is used to build tension and to gain an emotion response from the audience. It was shown in D.W Griffiths film the "Birth of a nature." It constantly cuts between scenes to show tension, its shown is the film when the troops and close to discovering women and children. From this cutting has progressed further, and has progressed to the use of montage, which was famous used in Rocky 4. This was created my Eisenstein's and is create for a passage of time and place or a metaphorical meaning. The kuleshov effect is also showing the progress in editing. This is where viewers want more meaning and connotation, the shot is down to the editing and the way that the two different shots are put together. 180 degree rule, has also progress editing, this is where camera does not cross an imaginary lone, as it can confuse the audience as the would see the characters in different places.
Moviola- Moviola is an editing machine which, film makers use to view the film whilst editing. Iwan Serruier created Moviola in 1924. This allowed edited to concentrate on different scenes and be able to improve the scenes, this also give them the chance to see what was working and what wasn't working. It also meant that the transitions between cuts was better and made the continuity editing better.
Flatbed- The flatbed is another machine tat editors could use, this was more advanced then the moviola. Audio and pictures rolls load onto motorises disks, they move forwards and backward separately or together for synchronisation between the sound and picture.
Modern Editing- Editing was evolved through technology, and editing has become easier and smoother to use. Softwares that you can use now are Final Cut Pro and Adobe Premier Pro. Premier Pro allows you to cut you film in different ways and gives you different effects that you can add. It also gives you the chance to cut clips and cut them directly at the sot that you want it to be cut. Premier Pro is also easy to use and can be picked up very quickly. With editors being given the chance to edit and experiment is means that they can look at showing something is a different way and can still have the originally without it being damage.
Above is a editing techniques used in filming. I have explain the techniques, shown my own example and used an example that from a film. I think that tutorial is successful and I found is useful to use when looking at different shots.
I have analysed a clip from Francois Truffunt film The 400 Blows. I chose this clip, as I thought that there was a lot to talk about both contextual and visual.
Having looked at the British New Wave, I had decided to look at The French New Wave instead, I feel that i made the right decision and enjoyed looking at the this New Wave. I felt that the french new wave was a lot more interesting. I felt that I could find a lot more information on and as I didn't know anything about the french new wave but knew a little about the British new wave. I felt that this would push me more and having started to look at the films I found them to visual and contextual more interesting. Once I started my research I had decided to look at both Jean-Luc Godard and Francois Truffunt and start to see how the films were reflecting real life, quite a few times reflecting their own life. I decided to do a powerpoint which I thought that it would be the best for me and work more towards my strengths. Having done the powerpoint, I found that there was a few spelling mistakes, I need to have someone else look through my work before presenting to make sure everything was spelt correctly and that everything made sense. Also I found it hard to say some of the names, I feel that if I practise a little more I could have found they easier to say. When presenting I found a few points that I could go more in depth with and speak more about. For example Jean-Luc Godard's Breathless using jumps-cuts but wanting it to be documentary like is contradicting, I could have spoke more about how in one aspect it links in with the idea of New Wave and being different. However is is contradicting but the jumps cuts were only there because the film was to long and Jean-Luc Godard needed to cut the film down. Overall I'm happy with how this contextual research went.
Having studies the French New wave, I was influenced to make my own new wave. Having looked at Jean-Luc Godard and Francois Truffauts work, particular Breathless, A Woman is a Woman and The 400 Blows. I wanted to use the technical conventions that they have used, looking at the jump cut, hand held camera, natural lighting and long takes. I also wanted to add in the camera and lighting techniques that I have learnt. For example using different shots, like a pan across.
When filming for my new wave film, I hoped to contrast between Digbeth, particle the custard factory and that area around to business area of Birmingham and be able to in the editing stage to create jumps cuts between the both. However when I was filming I found that I didn't have enough time to go to both and decided to just film Digbeth and get my filming do there, this meant that I wasn't rushing. I felt that this meant I could spend more timing filming in Digbeth and making sure that everything was ok that I was filming. I enjoyed filming in Digbeth I found that I could film different things and that it would all fit together well, whilst sticking to an non-linera narrative.
Having looked back at my footage I am happy with it, and how it all looks together. I like using hand held and being able to see camera shake, I feel that it works well with the concept and also linked with my contextual research. While filming i did film parts of the christmas market but I found that this did't work as well as I wanted, and didn't work well with my other clips. Neither thought I wanted to used a non-linear narrative, I found this was random to add it into my video and didn't work with my footage. One of my clips is overexposure and I like this because I feel that it is different to my other clips and i feel that it works well and stands out. Also I thought that it would work well with the idea of the new wave, and filming things that 'strictly don't stand'.
I like how Jean-Luc Godard used jumped cuts within his film Breathless, I wanted to add this to into my video in the editing stage. I wanted my jumps cuts to be subtle but as well for it to be noticeable.
Having watched The 400 Blows, I found that they used long takes, I was particular influenced in the final scene of the film especially when he was running away from a teacher. I like the tracking shot and following him running in one shot and the use of hand held camera. I wanted to add this into my video, using one shot whilst following someone. I did this when following Frankie around the shop Cow. I like the long shot, and I feel when the you watch the film it feels like you are following Frankie. Which I feel fits in well with the idea of documentary, and following someone apart. Jean-Luc Godard's, Breathless film was said to be documentary like. I feel that this clips fit my work well with the research that I did.
I wanted to add music to the background of the film and just have non-diegetic sound, to start with I didn't know what sort of music to have and what music would go with my new wave. I looked at having instrumental acoustic music, I found passenger let it go, which I thought would go well. When watching back I found that it didn't go well because the beat was changing in the chorus and the beat was more dramatic. If I wanted to use more dramatic and noticeable jumps cuts, this could have worked well with more dramatic music. This didn't work with how I wanted to edited to my video you expected something to happen and it wasn't. I struggled to find acoustic music to go with my video, as I only wanted the music to have a few beats. Having looked, I finally found photography by Ed Sheeran and a acoustic instrumental. I found that this worked a lot better and worked with my film.
Having finished my new wave I have thought of ways that I could improve it if I had the change to go back and re-edit it. I would add diegetic sound is post production, linking back to my research of The French new wave. Particular in Godard's film Breathless they add the sound in post production and I think it could be a good way to link them together. For example I could get sound of a train going past, and noise of cars, to fit in with my footage. I also feel that this would work well, using both non-deigetic and diegetic sound. Also I change the ending of video, having a more of an ending, instead of just having the videoed stopped. This might be having someone looking at the camera. for example after the tracking shoot in Cow, I could have had Frankie look into the camera. This would link in with my research in The 400 Blows. Also I could have finished the video outside of the shop and maybe had a bus or something going pass and filming it on a side shoot. When looking back as my footage I had found that I had use a lot of pan up and downs, I felt that this did work well, but it would have been better if I used different camera shots. This would have shown more skills that I have learnt and might have worked better. Another way that I could improve my work is by using a different lens, this would give me different shots. For example if I used a 50mm lens, when film in the shop, I could have used a lower aperture which would contrast between the high aperture outside.
Overall I'm happy with how my final new wave went and happy with how it all worked together. I feel that it works well and I enjoyed filming and editing it. I enjoyed being able to researching The French New Wave and being able to link it to mine.
Planning for new wave film - Google Maps and Visual influences.
Google Maps- Places that i want to film when I'm filming on the Birmingham trip. The first place that I will visit first in the Custard Factory, and I hope to get different shots and use different camera techniques that I have learnt when I'm there. Below I have got images from google maps of where I wanted to go and I hope to spend the morning at the custard factory. Once finished here I hope to walk to the centre of Birmingham and on the way go to Cow, a vintage shop. I wanted to follow someone around the shop and go a long shot. I feel that this would work well, and be different to the parts that I will be filming.
Visual Influences
This is the final scene in The 400 blows, I like the tracking shots and the use of long shots within this clip, I feel that it works well. I wanted to use long shots and use tracking shots and follow someone for part of my video. I want to add this into my video and be able to link to a documentary, link back to the film Breathless and 400 Blows.
In the post production stage I hope to add jump cuts, I feel that this will work well and I like the way that it has been used in Breathless. I feel that this was worked well and I feel that it looks good. I the idea of someone watching the film and remembering that it is a film, I hope to add subtle jumps cuts.
Music-
I hope to add acoustic instrumental to my film, I feel that this will work well with the sort of shots that I want to take. Having looked at the different types of music, I found having something acoustic would work well, I feel that it have had lyrics I would need to fit the shots around the lyrics. Whilst filming and editing my video I will looking and listening out for music that I will work well with my video.
