Carol Vernallis- The Kindest Cut 

Carol Vernallis, looked at the analysis of editing in a music videos and Hollywood films and talks about the difference between the two. I have looked at her essay 'The Kindest Cut'. She talks about narrative and how a narrative is edited together. She also looks at how should and image are synchronised through the videos and how this is done through the editing. Carol also talks about the star image and the impact upon this, looking at regular, closes ups of the artist.

Carol Vernallis believes that the most important things to look at when a music video is produced is to look at the narrative, editing, camera movement and framing and diegesis.

Narrative:

Narrative, is a visual way is which a reflects upon the lyrics of the song. The narrative might not always be completed and it might be left open for the audience's own interpretation, it can also be fragmented. A subject will be driving the music video forward, this doesn't always have to be narrative and it could be done my the music or editing.

Editing:
music video editing can disrupt or even break the conventions of continuity editing. Editing can become the vital part of the music video and even be foreground and the basic of the video before the narrative. This moves away for the boundaries of content editing. Music videos have a certain style of editing that is easily recognised by conventions such as: Jump cuts, breaking the 30 degree rile, cutting to lyrics of the beat, juxtaposed frames.

Camera movements and framing:
Carol talks about how establishing shots are the main or one of the main elements in a music video, and are used instead of close ups. This links in with how Carol talks about extreme shots and how these are used a lot in music videos. The camera can move in time with the beat of the music or the lyrics. The styles of which the music video is framed depends on upon the genre of the music video.

Diegesis:
Carol Vernallis talks about the actions in a video will not always be competed and some times are left unfinished. Meaning that there are a lot of repetition of shots and how some shot are seemed to be more important than others, this is because of the way that they are shot or framed in the post production stage.
